Member of the Greening Education Partnership

The Climate Energy and Livelihoods Initiative (CELI) has joined the Greening Education Partnership, a global community of practice on the role of education in tackling climate change.

The Partnership was launched in 2022 at the United Nations Secretary-General's Transforming Education Summit. It brings together national governments, intergovernmental organisations, youth groups, civil society organisations and the private sector around one goal: getting every learner climate-ready.

Membership puts CELI alongside education ministries, universities and civil society organisations from across the world, with access to the Partnership's working groups, its Global Tracker of progress, and invitations to its meetings at the annual climate COPs.

Why this matters for our work

In Nigeria, climate change is already shaping what children learn and the conditions they learn in. Classrooms sit without power. Schools lose days to floods and heat. Young people leave school with no exposure to the renewable energy sector, a sector that could employ many of them.

CELI works on exactly this ground. Our programmes cover clean energy access for underserved communities, green skills training for young people and women, agrovoltaics, and climate education in schools.

Our first field activity took place at Junior Secondary School (JSS) Kpaduma, Abuja, on 14 July 2026. Over one hour, our team worked with 20 students from JSS2, aged 13 to 15, on how climate change affects their communities and how clean, affordable energy can build more resilient livelihoods.

The Partnership organises its work around four pillars: greening schools, greening curriculum, greening teacher training and education systems' capacities, and greening communities. CELI's programmes speak directly to the first and the last of these, and our planned work on green skills speaks to the second.

What we will do as a member

  • Take part in the Partnership's working groups and quarterly meetings
  • Share evidence and stories from our school and community programmes in Nigeria with the Partnership's Global Tracker
  • Build climate and clean energy content into our training for young people and teachers
  • Work with schools, communities and partners in Nigeria to make learning spaces climate-smart and energy secure

A note on where we are

CELI was incorporated in Nigeria in July 2026 as an Incorporated Trustees organisation, registration number IT 9670213. Joining the Greening Education Partnership in our first year tells us the direction is right. It also raises the standard we hold ourselves to.

If you work in education, energy or climate in Nigeria and want to work with us, write to us.
